Nahargarh Fort, perched on the rugged ridges of the Aravalli Hills overlooking the city of Jaipur, is one of Rajasthan’s most iconic historical monuments. Though Nahargarh was part of a defensive ring along with Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort, it was rarely used in actual warfare. Instead, it became a royal retreat and hunting lodge for the kings and their families.

One of the most magnificent additions to the fort was made in the 19th century, when Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh built the Madhavendra Bhawan — a beautiful palace complex with separate suites for each of his queens, connected through corridors. During the Revolt of 1857, the fort provided safe refuge to many Europeans living in Jaipur. Interestingly, for many years, a cannon was fired from the fort every day at noon to signal time to the city’s residents.
