Ranthambore Fort is one of the most fascinating historical sites in Rajasthan. History of Ranthambore Fort

The origins of Ranthambore Fort date back to the 10th century. The fort was initially built by the Chauhan rulers, who were known for their bravery and strategic military architecture. Over the centuries, many powerful dynasties fought for control of the fort because of its strategic location.

One of the most famous rulers associated with the fort was Rao Hammir Dev Chauhan, a legendary Rajput king who ruled Ranthambore during the 13th century. He was known for his courage and resistance against invading forces.

In 1301, the powerful Sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khilji, attacked Ranthambore Fort. After a long and intense battle known as the Siege of Ranthambore (1301), the fort eventually fell into the hands of the Delhi Sultanate.

Later, the fort came under the control of the Mughals and eventually became part of the kingdom of Jaipur under the rule of the Kachwaha Rajputs.

Architecture of the Fort

Ranthambore Fort is an impressive example of Rajput military architecture. Built on a steep hill about 700 feet above the surrounding plains, the fort covers a vast area and is protected by strong stone walls and massive gates.

The fort has seven grand gates that once served as strong defensive points. Inside the fort complex, visitors can explore ancient temples, palaces, tanks, and ruins that tell the stories of the past.

Some of the most notable structures inside the fort include:

  • Trinetra Ganesh Temple

  • Hammir Palace

  • Badal Mahal

  • Jogi Mahal

These structures showcase a combination of Rajput architectural style, simple yet strong stone construction, and strategic design meant for defense.

Trinetra Ganesh Temple

One of the most important attractions inside the fort is the famous Trinetra Ganesh Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is considered one of the oldest temples of Ganesh in Rajasthan.

According to legend, the idol of Lord Ganesha appeared in the fort during the rule of Hammir Dev Chauhan. Today, thousands of devotees visit the temple every day to seek blessings. It is also a popular tradition for newly married couples to send their first wedding invitation to this temple.

Ranthambore Fort and Wildlife

One of the unique aspects of Ranthambore Fort is its location within Ranthambore National Park, one of the most famous tiger reserves in India.

As visitors climb the path leading to the fort, they often encounter wildlife such as:

  • Peacocks

  • Langurs

  • Deer

The surrounding forest and lakes create a beautiful natural setting. From the top of the fort, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the jungle and nearby lakes like Padam Talao.
